Being trained in Western Traditional Herbal Medicine, Luzia
mainly uses indigenous herbs in the form of tinctures, but also
herbs like Echinacea from North America.
Luzia buys most of the tinctures from the Organic
Herb Trading Company in Somerset, which uses only organic
and fresh herbs. For some tinctures she uses organic herbs from
her own garden, or from the walled garden belonging to the Long
Crichel Bakery.
Luzia
has been practising herbal medicine in the beautiful village
of Turnworth, about
six miles from Blandford. Medicinal herbs literally grow on
her doorstep, as they do in everybody's garden. Sadly though
many are considered ‘weeds,’ as in the case of dandelion
or nettles.
Consultations
An initial consultation costs £30 to £45 and lasts
between an hour and an hour and half. The prescribed medicine
costs on average £5 for one week’s supply. Unfortunately,
public transport to the village of Turnworth is a bit sparse!
If a patient is unable to drive to the practice Luzia is happy
to arrange home visits.
The
key principle of the discipline is to treat a patient holistically.
To do this a Herbalist is required to consider all the different
symptoms in a patient; any conventional treatment they are taking,
their diet, lifestyle and past history, with the aim of finding
the cause of the illness.
The emphasis is always on the importance of reaching the correct
diagnosis. The search for the cause of an illness is often like
detective work.
As a result three different patients with seemingly
identical symptoms might be given three completely different
herbal prescriptions depending on the individual cause of their
condition.
