Turmeric
(Curcuma longa)
Turmeric. One teaspoon of the powdered root helps to lower the blood sugar level.

It gently activates the liver function, which regulates and balances the body's hormones.

Turmeric helps to prevent and dissolve gallstones and is useful in the treatment of hepatitis.

It lowers cholesterol levels.

Curcumin is being studied and researched as an anti-inflammatory, as a possible cancer inhibitor, and as a strong anti-oxidant.
Its anti-inflammatory action may be due to leukotriene inhibition (leokotrienes are involved in many allergic and immunological reactions).

Curcumin and volatile oil are both partly responsible for anti-inflammatory action.

Turmeric acts as free radical scavenger and antioxidant therefore inhibiting DNA damage.

Curcumin has displayed antitumor activity and may be protective against some cancers, such as colon cancer.
